The Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s government approved an initiative on Wednesday to start discussions on a Free Trade Agreement with the United States, following concerns over new US tariffs on Bosnian goods. The initiative, proposed by FBiH Prime Minister Nermin Niksic, will be forwarded to the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina for further action.

The move comes in response to the US decision to impose a 10% tariff on all imports starting April 2, alongside a higher 35% tariff on goods from countries with a trade deficit, including Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, Washington suspended the new tariffs for 90 days on April 9.

According to official data, trade with the US represents around 1% of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s total foreign trade. In 2024, exports to the US amounted to 234.5 million Bosnian marks (approximately €120 million), while imports reached 190 million marks (approximately €97 million).

Although the tariffs are temporarily suspended, the government warns that they have already put additional pressure on global markets. If fully implemented, they could negatively impact Bosnia’s economy, particularly its defence, metal, electrical, chemical, food, and wood industries. The indirect effects could be even greater due to the US tariffs on the EU, Bosnia’s most significant trading partner.

Officials stress the need for urgent discussions to find mutually beneficial solutions, recognising the US as one of Bosnia’s key allies.
