Filip Vujanovic, the former president of Montenegro, told N1 Monday that Montenegro had a continuity of attitude towards Srebrenica, and that he visited Srebrenica in 2010 and 2015 as the president of this country. Vujanovic also said that he believes that the Resolution on Srebrenica, which was adopted in this country, did not cause the need for new elections, but that internal relations in the ruling coalition will have to be settled.

“Montenegro had a continuity of attitude towards Srebrenica. In 2010 and 2015, I visited Srebrenica as president, expressing respect and regret for the victims. I conveyed that the courts determined the genocide in Srebrenica and announced the state policy of Montenegro towards Srebrenica,” said Vujanovic.

“It is clearly emphasized that genocide does not refer to the people or the state, it (the Resolution) did not stigmatize the people, but those who participated in the genocide. Montenegro pointed that out in a clear way. There were attitudes that did not follow that,” Vujanovic told N1.

Vujanovic said that Montenegro's attitude towards the courts is a respectful attitude and that the country has an obligation to follow the attitude towards Srebrenica.

“This resolution has been consistently respected. There was no equal relationship within the coalition in Montenegro, which I think justifies the Resolution on Srebrenica, and I think that this relationship has been expressed,” Vujanovic said.

Vujanovic stayed in Sarajevo on the occasion of the Forum on the Western Balkans, and in that context, he said that this is exactly the message to the European Union that the Western Balkans is a part of it.

The Parliament of Montenegro adopted the Resolution on the Genocide in Srebrenica earlier this month and dismissed the country's Justice Minister over his controversial statements on the 1995 genocide in Bosnia.

According to the Resolution, proposed by the Bosniak Party in the country, Montenegro will declare July 11 a day of mourning and remembrance for the victims of the 1995 genocide that took place in the eastern Bosnian town and the Parliament will condemn any public denial of the genocide.

The Resolution passed with 55 MPs voting in favour, 19 against, and six abstaining.
