A "ceremonial parade" was held in Banja Luka on Thursday to mark "The Day of Republika Srpska", which has been declared unconstitutional multiple times by the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina due to its discriminatory nature.
Despite the rulings of the Constitutional Court of BiH, this event was organized again and gathered approximately 3,000 participants on the streets of Banja Luka today. Representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of RS and the civil sector attended, alongside a large number of citizens.
Citizens waved tricolor flags and photos and videos from this controversial event showed flags bearing the images of war criminals Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic.
Milorad Dodik, the President of Republika Srpska, did not attend due to his recovery following surgery he underwent recently in Belgrade.
However, it was attended by Zeljka Cvijanovic, a member of the BiH Presidency; Nenad Stevandic, the President of RS National Assembly; and a delegation from Serbia led by Aleksandar Vulin, Serbia's Deputy Prime Minister. Other guests included Serbian Patriarch Porfirije, the Russian Federation's Ambassador to BiH Igor Kalabuhov, and numerous other representatives of BiH institutions from the Serbian community.
The civil sector contingent included students, pupils, and “veterans” from organizations referred to as “key to the creation and defense of RS”.
Additionally, the RTRS program reported that the notorious pro-Russian organization “Night Wolves” was also present at the controversial celebration.
Marking January 9th as Republika Srpska Day is problematic not only because it violates the rulings of the highest judicial institutions in BiH but also because it exacerbates divisions within the country and undermines its sovereignty and independence.
The Constitutional Court of BiH has declared the celebration of January 9th as Republika Srpska Day unconstitutional three times.
To date, no one has been criminally prosecuted for this violation.
The Constitutional Court of BiH deemed January 9th unconstitutional because RS authorities celebrate it as the date when, in 1992, the then Assembly of the Serbian People in BiH declared the “Republika Srpska of the Serbian People in BiH” as an independent entity within Bosnia and Herzegovina.
For other ethnic groups in BiH, January 9th marks the beginning of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as the start of ethnic cleansing, war crimes, and genocide against the non-Serb population in RS territory.
