The leadership of the Croat National Council of Bosnia and Herzegovina (HNS BiH) on Monday called for amending the election law in order to prevent the outvoting of Croats and imposing Zeljko Komšić as their member of the BiH Presidency.
After a session held in Mostar, HNS BiH said that the elections for members of the BiH Presidency confirmed the necessity of amending the election law because, despite the unity of all Croatian political parties and the support of Croatian votes, candidate Borjana Kristo did not win.
Croats are still not able to have their legitimate representative in the BiH Presidency, the press release reads.
In the 2 October elections, whose results were confirmed this weekend, Zeljko Komsic was elected Croat member of the BiH Presidency with 227,540 votes won, while Borjana Kristo received 180,255 votes.
Most of Komsic's voters come from areas where Bosniaks make up a majority of the population and Croats are a minority, while Kristo won in 29 municipalities and cities where Croats make up a majority. There are three and a half times more Bosniaks than Croats in the Federation. The leading Croat parties this year decided to nominate just one candidate as the Croat member of the BiH Presidency. However, despite the unanimous support of the largest parties, that candidate could not win the election due to the higher number of eligible Bosniak voters.
These developments have made those parties call for amending the election law in order to prevent the recurrence of the phenomenon such is Komsic, who has been elected to the BiH Presidency for the fourth time.
The HNS BiH expressed satisfied with the outcome in other segments of the recent general elections, and announced the continuation of the parties’ cooperation in the process of the formation of the authorities at all levels.
