Every October 20, the International Day of Air Traffic Controllers celebrates those responsible for keeping flights safe. Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Air Navigation Services (BHANSA) currently employs 70 air traffic controllers and 69 area controllers, who manage the nation’s busy airspace.
This day emphasizes the crucial role air traffic controllers play in ensuring safety and efficiency. Emina Turulja, head of Sarajevo's Air Traffic Control Department, highlighted the pride in their work, noting the rarity of their profession, with fewer than 150 controllers across the country.
“Our job is vital—each flight carries 150 to 200 passengers, so the responsibility is immense. We undergo rigorous selection to ensure only the most focused and capable candidates are chosen,” Turulja explained.
Last year, around 518,000 flights passed through Bosnian airspace, and that number is expected to increase by six percent. BHANSA is also training its first generation of controllers entirely in Bosnia, with new controllers expected to be operational by 2025.
Edin Becic, an area controller and instructor, added, “We handle overflights mostly, working 24/7 to ensure safe passage. Our job is demanding, but we are trained for emergencies and quick decision-making under pressure.”
This profession, though challenging, is essential to global air travel.
