Russia is trying to provoke “chaos” in the Balkans to distract the West from the war in Ukraine, but this would not be possible without Serbia, specifically, President Aleksandar Vucic, a research fellow with the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, Dr Ivana Stradner, told N1.
Stradner, one of the authors of the first report of the “Western Balkans Observatory”, which was launched at the New Lines Institute in the United States, spoke about the recent incidents in northern Kosovo, saying that it was “a dream come true” for Putin because it was an opportunity to show that NATO will not do anything other than release a statement.
“This would not be possible without the help of Serbia. President (Aleksandar) Vucic is not the victim of Russian interference. He is the one who perfectly enables it and benefits from it”, Stradner said.
She explained that “escalating the crisis and then de-escalating the crisis” allows Vucic to position himself as a mediator in the region – something he can use as a bargaining chip when dealing with the West.
More about Russia’s influence in the Balkans, how those activities affect the region and what the US and the EU should do to counter it can be seen in the video linked above.
