Four months after catastrophic floods hit Bosnia and Herzegovina, Donja Jablanica still bears visible traces of devastation. Residents are repairing the damage, but reconstruction is progressing slowly. Meanwhile, responsibility for the tragedy, which claimed 19 lives, remains unaddressed, and authorities have yet to take concrete measures.
The floods that struck Donja Jablanica destroyed almost everything—homes, infrastructure, and agricultural land. The railway, which also suffered massive damage, was reopened only three months after the disaster.
However, homes remain unrepaired. In Donja Jablanica, only a few residents are attempting to clean up around their houses and prepare them for a return to normal life—if that will even be possible.
Repairs are underway on the mosque, which sustained significant damage. Many residents have abandoned the ruins that were once their homes. They say they struggle to cope with the sight of Donja Jablanica and have no plans to return.
Although it is known that most victims died due to mudslides that buried them, the question of responsibility for the disaster remains unanswered. There is no information about any resignations or arrests of those responsible, nor has a serious investigation been launched to bring justice to the victims. Criminal liability has yet to be determined.
For now, residents are awaiting a final assessment of the damage and information on whether it will be safe to continue living in Donja Jablanica. Given the current situation, the recovery of Donja Jablanica seems distant, and the need for accountability from the authorities is becoming increasingly evident.
