The Association of Mothers of the Srebrenica and Zepa Enclaves has submitted a proposal to all levels of government in Bosnia and Herzegovina to declare January 9 a Day of Mourning within their respective jurisdictions.

“Following our proposal last year to declare January 9 a Day of Mourning in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and considering the ongoing provocations from Republika Srpska, we are now proposing to all levels of government in Bosnia and Herzegovina to initiate the process of declaring January 9 a Day of Mourning within their territorial and constitutional competencies,” the proposal states.

The proposal recalls that on January 9, 1992, the “state of the Serbian people in Bosnia and Herzegovina” was proclaimed, which marked the beginning of a series of crimes against the non-Serb population in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The association emphasizes that despite the ruling of the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina declaring the celebration of January 9 as a holiday in Republika Srpska unconstitutional, the date continues to be observed, offending victims and undermining legal decisions.

“The legacy of January 9 symbolizes the darkest memories for all victims in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Declaring it a Day of Mourning serves as a reminder of the crimes committed and the ongoing fight to preserve truth and justice,” the proposal states.

The association has called on institutions to recognize the importance of this date and declare it a day of remembrance to honor all victims of crimes and to send a clear message that the rulings of international courts are respected and implemented.
