The Srebrenica Memorial Center has been enriched by a donation of 500,000 Bosnian marks (some € 250,000) left to them by the late Mustafa Habul, an architect who emigrated to Australia in the 1960s. Despite spending most of his life across the ocean and gaining significant renown, Habul never forgot Bosnia and Herzegovina. Towards the end of his life, he decided to gift a substantial sum of money to this Center.

On May 8th this year, the Memorial Center opened a depot dedicated to storing biological material and artefacts of the Srebrenica genocide victims.

“The facility, whose construction cost over one million marks, was completed thanks to the joint collaboration of USAID and the Memorial Center, with the crucial support of Mustafa Habul's donation of over half a million marks,” stated officials from the Memorial Center.

on Friday, Reno Habul, son of the late Mustafa Habul, visited the Memorial Center, fulfilling his father's wish to donate funds to this institution after his passing. During his first visit, Reno spoke with director Emir Suljagic and the Center's staff, toured the permanent exhibitions, and visited the depot built thanks to his father's donation.

“Today is my first time here, and it's difficult to describe the emotions. I am here because of my father, who wanted to contribute to this place, and I'm glad he did. It's an honour to see where the money he donated has been used. Although I don't have a direct connection to this place through family ties, nor was I born here, nor have I experienced what these people have endured, today I felt many emotions – talking with mothers, the Center's staff, touring the complex and the cemetery. Much can be said, yet not everything can be expressed. This place needs concrete support for the generations to come. It needs to endure, so I know how donations from individuals like my father can help this institution grow and survive in the future. Every kind of support is significant. This is my first visit, but it certainly won't be my last,” said Reno Habul during his visit.

The Memorial Center emphasized that the generosity and kindness of individuals like Mustafa Habul are of immeasurable importance in preserving the culture of remembrance.
