The Tuzla Canton government has proposed a new gun and ammunition law, now headed to the Assembly after nearly a year of public discussion. This law introduces significant changes and aligns with European Union regulations, prompted by recent tragic events in Gradacac and Lukavac.
In August, Nermin Sulejmanovic, using an unlicensed gun, killed his partner and two others before committing suicide. Earlier, a student seriously injured a teacher with his deceased grandfather's unregistered gun. To prevent such incidents, the new law tightens procedures.
From now on, the death of a gun owner will automatically notify the relevant police officer, who will ensure the weapon is surrendered by the deceased's family. Additionally, in all reported domestic violence cases, firearms will be temporarily confiscated until the case is resolved.
Both government and opposition members of the Tuzla Canton Assembly support the law, especially its domestic violence provisions. However, there are concerns about the shortened license validity from ten to five years, as it might increase costs for gun owners due to more frequent medical checks.
Citizens believe these measures should have been implemented sooner and hope they will reduce accidents and misuse of firearms.
Currently, Bosnia and Herzegovina lacks a national gun law, leaving the responsibility to cantons. The proposed law in Tuzla Canton aims to address this gap and enhance public safety.
