N1 celebrates a decade of trust, truth, and dedicated journalism. Through the hard work of teams both in front of and behind the cameras, N1 has become a symbol of independent journalism and integrity across the Balkans. With teams of journalists and editors based in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Croatia, and Slovenia, N1 continually strives to uphold independence and ensure the credibility of its reporting. Marking this occasion, Peter Horrocks, former Director of BBC World Service and Senior Advisor to N1’s Editorial Board, joined the celebration.
“N1 has led the way in creating courageous, truthful, and inspiring journalism over the past 10 years,” said Horrocks. “In regions with hybrid democracies, this kind of work remains a continual challenge, but N1 stands out across the former Yugoslav states as a leading media agency.”
Reflecting on N1's journey, Horrocks emphasized the significance of establishing distinct identities for each centre in Sarajevo, Belgrade, Zagreb, and later Ljubljana, tailored to the perspectives of their audiences. He acknowledged the rise of digital journalism and social media as both a valuable opportunity for public voice and a new challenge due to misinformation.
“The influence of digital media impacts television journalism significantly,” Horrocks noted. “People now have immediate access to information via their phones, which means journalism has to adapt, offering a wide range of perspectives. Independent journalism provides a vital alternative in the age of social media.”
On editorial responsibility, Horrocks highlighted N1’s commitment to transparency and accountability to its audience, reflecting best practices from media organizations like the BBC and CNN.
“Unlike media organizations closely aligned with governments, N1 offers openness and accountability to the public, which I am proud of,” he concluded.
