In a conversation with N1 during the program marking the 29th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, Dr. Edina Becirevic, a professor at the Faculty of Criminalistics, Criminology, and Security Studies, emphasized the need to view genocide as a process and to recognize genocidal intent.

She highlighted the efforts of scholars to provide an accurate historical record, ensuring that all aspects of violence and suffering are recognized.

“If genocide is recognized as a process, it is significant for comparative methods and helps in identifying other cases of genocide,” Becirevic stated.

Furthermore, she pointed out that although the legal recognition of genocide is limited to Srebrenica, Western literature often argues that the entire period of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina was characterized by genocidal actions against Bosniaks.

“This approach reflects a comprehensive understanding of the nature of the war and the intent of the crimes, contributing to a fuller and more accurate portrayal of events,” she added.

To promote reconciliation, inclusive memorialization is necessary, according to Dr. Becirevic, who noted that this is practically impossible as long as there is a discourse of genocide denial.

“Inclusive monuments that honor the experiences of different groups can help strengthen a sense of shared history and mutual respect. However, in the current political climate, with a terrible campaign from neighboring countries aimed at reviving the Karađorđevo agreement, it is not possible to work towards this. The political climate needs to calm down first,” Becirevic stated in her interview with N1.

She also commented on today's statement by Milorad Dodik, describing it as a tactical pretense of tolerance to serve a strategic policy of hatred.

“Let’s not be deceived by Milorad Dodik. His spin doctors from Belgrade advised him to make such a statement, and that’s it,” she added.
