The massive floods that ravaged large parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina on Friday and claimed at least 16 lives left devastation in their wake and the situation remains critical in many affected regions. Rescuers are still searching for those missing.
“It woke me up just after midnight. My neighbour’s house was completely swept away. The house was carried off as if it were made of paper. Everything can be replaced, but lives cannot,” Almin Sultic, from the village of Sultici, told N1.
This is one of the areas that were strongly affected by the severe floods where rising waters swept away several cars, bridges, and homes.
One video posted by a local shows the damage along the M-17 highway and local roads in the Jablanica municipality:
The Civil Protection Operations Center in Jablanica reported that a total of 67 people sought medical help at the Jablanica Health Center, with four of them transferred for further treatment.
Jablanica Mayor Damir Sabanovic confirmed meanwhile that no residential areas are cut off due to the flooding and landslides anymore.
“A large number of machines are working on clearing the roads in all directions, but traffic is being prioritized for rescue services,” he said.
The Pomozi.ba charity reported that citizens have rallied together to support the victims and that nearly two million BAM were raised for them in just 36 hours.
“Within 36 hours of launching the ‘Floods 2024’ campaign, close to two million BAM have been raised. Thank you to the wonderful people all over the world,” the organization said in a statement.
Meanwhile, rescue teams from Croatia, equipped with rescue dogs, have been deployed in Donja Jablanica to assist in search operations. The government of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton remains on high alert as relief efforts continue across the flood-stricken areas.
