Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, has been chosen as the best destination in the world for 2025 by the readers of National Geographic magazine. The city, rich in history and culture, beat out popular tourist spots such as Thailand, Tunisia, Ireland, and Australia to take the top spot in the prestigious Readers’ Choice vote.
National Geographic pointed out that Sarajevo’s appeal to travellers continues to grow, captivating visitors with its blend of centuries-old history and stunning natural beauty. The Miljacka River, which flows under over a dozen bridges, is an integral part of the city’s charm. Iconic bridges like the Latin Bridge, known for its historical significance, and Skenderija, which according to local folklore was built from the same materials as the Eiffel Tower, are popular landmarks.
For history enthusiasts, Sarajevo offers a wealth of experiences. The Tunnel of Salvation stands as a testament to the city's resilience during the siege of the 1990s, serving as a reminder of Sarajevo’s indomitable spirit. For wine lovers, Sarajevo is also a gateway to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s famed wine varieties, including Zilavka, Blatina, and Vranac, the Magazine added.
Adventure seekers can also find plenty of outdoor activities, such as river rafting, alpine skiing, and hiking. One of Europe’s most majestic waterfalls is just a short trek from the city, making it a prime spot for nature lovers.
This recognition is yet another accolade for Sarajevo, which has been steadily breaking records in recent years in terms of tourist numbers. As the city continues to grow in popularity, it solidifies its place as one of the top travel destinations in the world.
