The Srebrenica-Potocari Memorial Center and the Memorial to the victims of the genocide of 1995, including the associations bringing together the families of victims of the genocide, welcomed the adoption of the Resolution of the United Nations General Assembly on the International Day of Remembrance and Commemoration of the Genocide in Srebrenica 1995.

“By adopting the Resolution and placing the Day of Remembrance of the genocide in Srebrenica in the Official Calendar of the United Nations, it marks the final chapter on the road to the world community’s recognition of the genocide. With the verdicts of the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, we hereby conclude the three-decade-long struggle for recognition of the truth about Srebrenica. Many thanks to Bosnia and Herzegovina's diplomacy and all friends of Bosnia and Herzegovina who did everything to welcome this news,” said the director of the Memorial Center, Emir Suljagic on Thursday.

The Memorial Center noted that the fight against genocide denial will continue, but that the public should move the deniers out of the focus of attention, and view them as isolated cases of failed politics.

For mothers who lost their loved ones in the Srebrenica genocide, the adoption of the United Nations General Assembly Resolution on the International Day of Remembrance and Commemoration of the Srebrenica Genocide of 1995 represents long-awaited justice and recognition.

The statement added that the Srebrenica Memorial Center will continue to be a bridge of interreligious and interethnic dialogue, and will remain a leading state institution on the path to ensure respect for all victims of the wars of the 1990s.

On Thursday, May 23, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Resolution on the Genocide in Srebrenica. Eighty-four countries voted in favour of the Resolution, 18 were against it, and 68 abstained.
