Today, July 11, many countries worldwide commemorate the Srebrenica Genocide Remembrance Day. Numerous international and local media are broadcasting live addresses, survivor stories, and court rulings related to the genocide. However, a Ukrainian news portal made a significant error in reporting the details about the Srebrenica genocide.

The portal, UNN (Ukrainian National News), provided incorrect information about the location and participants of the tragic events.

In an article titled “Today is the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Srebrenica Genocide: Why this event is important for Ukrainians,” the portal mistakenly stated that the victims were Kosovar Muslims.

“In July 1995, Kosovo Serb paramilitaries under the command of General Ratko Mladic killed about 8,000 Kosovo Muslims after capturing the town of Srebrenica.” UNN reported.

The error was repeated in the next paragraph:

“A terrible tragedy occurred at the height of the war in the Balkans. In July 1995, Kosovo Serb paramilitaries under the command of General Ratko Mladic killed about 8,000 Kosovo Muslim men aged 12 to 77 after capturing the town of Srebrenica.”

The Ukrainian portal explained why the day is also significant for Ukrainians:

“For Ukraine, today's event is important because it sets a precedent for proving the facts of war crimes. The massacre in Bucha, the massacres in Izium and other war crimes committed by the Russian occupiers must be properly assessed by international courts, and their organizer and perpetrators must receive fair sentences,” UNN noted.

At no point in the article was Srebrenica correctly linked to Bosnia and Herzegovina, though some details about the event were mentioned alongside explanations of Ukraine's vote during the adoption of the Srebrenica Resolution.

On May 23 of this year, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming July 11 as the International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Srebrenica Genocide. Eighty-four countries, including Ukraine, voted in favor of the resolution.
