The US Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Michael Murphy, attended a significant meeting at the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH) Parliament on Wednesday where representatives of all major political parties, except the Croat Democratic Union (HDZ) and the Croat Republican Party (HRS), discussed the Southern Gas Interconnection project, a key initiative aimed at ensuring Bosnia’s energy independence.
Joining Ambassador Murphy at the meeting was Alexander Kasanof, the US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Europe and Eurasia. Kasanof addressed the media after the session, emphasising the importance of the project.
“It was a very productive and beneficial meeting. The Southern Gas Interconnection is crucial for Bosnia and Herzegovina’s energy independence. Overcoming individual political interests is essential to achieving this independence,” said Kasanof.
Dragan Miokovic, a participant in the meeting, expressed gratitude for the US’ involvement in advancing this initiative.
“Thank you for showing such interest in this meeting. What happened today is exactly what we would expect from our closest ally, the United States. We received clear guidance and projections regarding the importance of the Southern Gas Interconnection law, which is one of the most critical projects for Bosnia and Herzegovina. It’s imperative to bring this legislation to Parliament and resolve this issue, which has been pending for over a year,” stated Miokovic.
Admir Cavalic also spoke to the media, voicing strong support for the US suggestions and stressing the urgency of the project.
“Our goal is to pass this law for the benefit of our citizens. This is a unique opportunity for unity on a vital matter. As the opposition, we will not engage in political games. This is legislation that was unanimously supported in the previous parliamentary term, even with amendments from HDZ BiH. With minor technical adjustments, it can move smoothly to the House of Peoples,” concluded Cavalic.
The meeting underscored the critical nature of the Southern Gas Interconnection project, which has the potential to enhance energy security and stability in Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, the absence of HDZ and HRS representatives at the meeting highlighted lingering political divisions that could pose challenges to the project’s progress.
