Gabriel Escobar, the United States special envoy for the Western Balkans said in an interview with Kosovo's Kanal 10 that he supports the decision of the High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Christian Schmidt, to impose changes to the Election Law and the Constitution of the Federation of BiH (FBIH) entity on election night.
Namely, when journalist Xhemail Rexha asked him to state his position on the use of the Bonn powers, Escobar said that he supports it.
“I do. The High Representative has an independent mandate that is spelled out in Dayton and we support not only the continued presence of the High Representative, but his authorities as well,” said Escobar.
The journalist further noted that Schmidt's move is considered an act of segregation in Bih, however, Escobar disagreed.
“It's a little more complicated than that. There are still some structures within the Dayton, and within the Constitution that call for division and representation according to the principle of three constituent peoples and the Others. And it is in that limited space that he was directing his activities toward,” Escobar said, among other things.
