The home side started brightly, pressing high and testing Italy’s defensive line early on. Despite several promising approaches, goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma remained largely untroubled in the opening exchanges. However, the momentum shifted abruptly in the 15th minute following a costly mistake by Bosnia’s goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj. His misplaced pass gifted possession to Nicolò Barella, who quickly set up Moise Kean for a precise finish from the edge of the box.

Conceding the goal sparked a strong reaction from the hosts. Bosnia intensified their attacking efforts, with Edin Dzeko and Esmir Bajraktarevic heavily involved in creating chances. Italy’s defence, led by Donnarumma, was forced into multiple key saves to preserve the lead.

The turning point came just before halftime when Alessandro Bastoni was shown a red card for bringing down Amar Memic, who was through on goal. Reduced to ten men, Italy shifted to a defensive approach, while Bosnia continued to dominate possession and create opportunities.

In the second half, Bosnia maintained pressure but struggled to break through until the 79th minute. A cross from Amar Dedic led to a rebound that substitute Haris Tabakovic converted to level the score.

With the match tied after 90 minutes, extra time followed. Italy nearly reclaimed the lead late in the first extra period, but Vasilj redeemed himself with a crucial save. Bosnia continued to push forward, yet neither side managed to score again.

The match was ultimately decided in a penalty shootout, where Bosnia and Herzegovina prevailed 4-1, delivering a historic victory over Italy. The result secures their place at the World Cup, where they will compete in Group B alongside Canada, Qatar and Switzerland.

Earlier today, Sarajevo Mayor Samir Avdic confirmed to N1 that the central homecoming celebration will be organised in front of the Eternal Flame (Vjecna vatra), one of the city's most iconic landmarks. The mayor revealed that the team is expected to appear on the famous balcony above the monument. A crazy night awaits Sarajevo.
