Illegal migrations cannot be allowed any longer and the only solution to the problem is strengthening the control on Bosnia’s eastern borders, Bosnian Security Minister Dragan Mektic said on Wednesday.

Mektic visited the north-western part of the country, where he met local authorities of the Una-Sana Canton (USC) and the City of Bihac to discuss the issue of increasing number of illegal migrants in this part of Bosnia.

Minister said following the meeting that those migrants who already entered Bosnia will be provided “a humane accommodation.”

“We will remove the camp in Sarajevo soon, and we will not allow migrants here in Una-Sana Canton either to decide where are they going to stay and how,” the minister said.

According to the Security Ministry, some 4,500 migrants entered Bosnia in the first four months of this year, 70% of which already left the country. The migrants, mostly of African-Asian origin, have started using Bosnia as a temporary shelter to their, as they say, final destinations in the western Europe.

Bihac Mayor Suhret Fazlic warned that the city was facing a humanitarian and security problem.

“This humanitarian part the citizens of Bihac are managing for now, but the security aspect should be taken over by senior institutions,” he added.

According to the Bosnian Border Police, the number of migrants passing through the country dramatically increased during the first few months of the year and the authorities already encountered problems with the lack of accommodation capacities for incoming migrants.
