The US is getting more and more involved in the Western Balkans, US Assistant Secretary of State Wess Mitchell told a Senate hearing on Washington’s European policy.
“We have intensified communication with Serbia and Kosovo and are promoting reforms in Bosnia-Herzegovina,” Mitchell is quoted as saying by the Voice of America’s Serbian service.
He said official Washington has given support through active diplomacy and close cooperation with the European Union to the Greek and Macedonian Prime Ministers, Alexis Tsipras and Zoran Zaev in reaching “a historic success in the two countries’ dispute over the name”, he is quoted as saying.
He expressed concern over the protests in Greece and Macedonia and over Russia’s possible interference following the resolving of the name dispute.
“We have seen that in Montenegro. Russian representatives made threatening statements and I think there is a chance that the Russian could try to interfere in Macedonia,” Mitchell said.
