The Law on Cyrillic script is being worked on, said the Republika Srpska entity Prime Minister Zeljka Cvijanovic. Speaking to the press, she pointed out that “numerous experts are engaged in a working group which will prepare this law,” which she called very important.

The Law was proposed by the entity Education and Culture Ministry.

Bosniak officials in this entity warned, earlier, that this Law, by which the Cyrillic script would become the main script in the RS, would be unconstitutional since the Latin and Cyrillic scripts are constitutionally equal in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Bosnia and Herzegovina consists of two entities: The Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (dominated by Bosniaks and Croats), the Republika Srpska (dominated by Serbs) and the District of Brcko, not dominated by any of the constituent peoples in the country.

Entity Vice President Ramiz Salkic called the announcements of the Law on Cyrillic script in the RS as unconstitutional. Head of the Bosniak caucus in the House of Peoples of the RS Mujo Hadzimerovic pointed out that this Law would be impossible to implement.

“The culmination of all of this would be the negation of the Latin script as a constitutionally equal script in the RS. That would be the last straw. Such rushing into illegality is incomprehensible, but, at the same time, it would be nothing foreign to Serb officials in this entity,” Hadziomerovic stressed.
