US Embassy: No parallel can be drawn between RS and Kosovo

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a sovereign and internationally recognized state, and no parallel can be drawn between Bosnia’s Republika Srpska (RS) entity and Kosovo, the US Embassy in Sarajevo told N1.

According to the media reports following the recent talks between the US President and the German Chancellor, one of the topics they discussed was the Western Balkans. Reportedly, Angela Merkel said that any new map drawing would trigger problems in this part of Europe.

Responding to the N1's inquiry if the Kosovo issue could be related to Bosnia, the US Embassy said the US government’s stance on this matter is clear.

“Just like we said on many occasions, there is no parallel between the RS and Kosovo. Bosnia and Herzegovina was a sovereign and internationally recognised state even before the Dayton Agreement,” the embassy said, adding that the US is “fully committed” to Bosnia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

“It is a well-known fact, the Dayton Peace Agreement and the Constitution of Bosnia and Herzegovina do not entitle any of (Bosnia’s) two entities with the right to secede from Bosnia and Herzegovina. The existence of these two entities is fully dependant on the existence of Bosnia and Herzegovina,” said the embassy.

The General Framework Agreement for Peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina, also known as the Dayton Peace Agreement (DPA), is the peace agreement reached at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in November 1995 and formally signed in Paris on 14 December 1995. These accords put an end to the 1992-95 Bosnian War, one of the armed conflicts in the former Socialist Federative Republic of Yugoslavia. The current Constitution of Bosnia and Herzegovina is the Annex 4 of the DPA.
