War veteran Ramo Becirevic who was apprehended on Wednesday during veterans’ protests in Sarajevo had died on Saturday morning due to heart failure.

According to his attorney, Mirnes Ajanovic, who notified the press of Becirevic’s death, he was a “victim of a brutal system.”

Seven police officers were injured during Wednesday war veterans’ protests which turned into a clash between the police and veterans who demanded that their requests be passed into the Law on the Rights of Veterans.

“Police officers of the Canton Sarajevo Interior Ministry secured the veterans’ protests in front of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH) entity Parliament building when the veterans started heading up the street of ‘Obala Kulina bana’ disrupting public order and attacking police officers,” the cantonal Interior Ministry said.

They said that as a result, police officers were forced to use force against a number of protesters. On that occasion, seven police officers were injured when clashes broke out.

The police also said that three protesters were detained on suspicion of attacking a police officer.

They added that the cantonal Public Prosecutor was informed of the events and police are continuing their investigation into the case.

The veterans had announced the mass protest and set September 5 as a deadline to the authorities to harmonize amendments to the Law on Veterans and Their Families in a special session. After the parliament failed to convene, the situation escalated into a mass protest.

The veterans’ demands are the publication of a single veteran registry, the veteran allowance, and the cut in the financing of veteran associations.
