The Alternative for Germany (AfD), the largest opposition party in the Bundestag, said it would require a referendum in Germany on the European Union enlargement covering the Western Balkans, the FoNet news agency reported on Thursday.

A deputy of this extreme right organisations, Siegberg Droese said that taking the Western Balkans countries into the EU “would Balkanise the EU and we don’t want that before we ask for our people’s consent.”

Droese said that the AfD would soon organise the popular vote on the issue, adding that the European Commission head Jean-Claude Juncker’s 2025 date for the enlargement was utterly bizarre and counter-productive.

He said that almost every Western Balkans state had structural problems with corruption and organised crime, but added his party would welcome the regions in the EU under the condition that various conditions were met, including an independent judiciary.

His party’s stand is that some Western Balkans Union which won’t be a part of the EU will be an option.

Out of six Balkan countries, Serbia and Montenegro have the accession talks opened, while Macedonia awaits the parliament approval of the deal with Greece on a new name to start the negotiations.

Bosnia is promised the prospect of joining when ready, as is Kosovo if it reaches an agreement on normalisation of relations with Serbia and overcomes the opposition of five EU member states that have so far refused to recognise its independence.

Albania is also waiting for the green light pending its success in fighting organised crime and corruption.
