European perspective of the Western Balkan countries is much better now than it used to be, Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said for Montenegrin media.
Speaking for Podgorica-based daily Pobjeda, Kurz said it was necessary for the countries of this region to focus on essential reform processes and good neighbourly relations, which need to be upgraded.
Austrian official also said Montenegro was making good progress in its accession negotiations with the European Union (EU).
“The leading role of Montenegro in this process is absolute as well as the maintenance of the so-called regatta principle, which means individual approach to achieved progress,” Kurz said.
According to him, Austria, which is now presiding country of the EU Council, is advocating that the 27 chapter in the accession talks is opened by end of the year.
“With this pace, the accession goal of 2025 doesn't seem utopian. It will be crucial for Montenegro to improve the reforms it started, primarily in the sector of fundamental values such as the rule of law and democratic institutions, and to prove the specific results,” he added.
