A trial of Ibro Cufuruovic, a radical who fought in Syria on the side of the Islamic State (IS) and was extradited to Bosnia and Herzegovina, commenced before the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo on Tuesday.

Cufurovic is the first Bosnian national to be extradited to stand trial.

He is charged with organising terrorist groups, illegal formation and involvement with foreign para-military or para-police forces and fighting on side with the IS terrorist organisation.

The Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN) reported that Bosnia and Herzegovina's prosecutor has noted that as a 19-year-old, Cufurovic had travelled to Turkey in the spring of 2014 and then entered Syria illegally and joined IS fighters.

The prosecution claims it is in possession of video clips from Cufurovic's Twitter account which show him standing above killed Syrian soldiers.

The defence's argument is that Cufurovic did not finance or fight on the side with IS.

Cufurovic's name was frequently mentioned in an informal trial against radical Islamist-Salafi Husein Bilal Bosnic who was convicted to seven years in prison for terrorism.
