After a seven-day journey, participants of the Srebrenica-Vukovar peace march arrived in their final destination Sunday evening, where they will honour the innocent victims killed during the siege of Vukovar in the early 1990s.
On Monday, Croatia marks the 28th anniversary of the Skabrnja massacre and the defeat of Vukovar's defence forces on November 18, 1991.
“Our main goal is to pay tribute to the victims of Vukovar, the genocide victims of Srebrenica, and all other victims in the cities that we passed through, conveying a message that such horrible crimes happen never again to anyone,” said Zulfo Salihovic, a representative of the Srebrenica-Vukovar peace march organising board.
The participants passed the 340-kilometre long path without any problems, he said adding that they were sincerely welcomed along the way, particularly in Croatia.
“We meet the representatives of Croatia's veteran associations. We talk about our fate during the war. When it comes to Vukovar and other municipalities in that area, they went through almost the same situation, the same Golgotha by the same enemy, which is the army and police of both Republika Srpska (Bosnia's Ser-dominated region) and the Republic of Serbia. That's why we have a lot to talk about,” said Salihovic.
This is the only way, according to him, to urge the institutions in charge of war crime processing to accelerate their work an bring the perpetrators to justice.
“There is one more goal of the Srebrenica-Vukovar march, which is not allowing the perpetrators of horrible crimes to have a peaceful sleep,” he added.
Some 30 participants took place in this year's march, which is considered one of the activities of marking the 24th Srebrenica genocide anniversary.
The Srebrenica-Vukovar Peace March was first organised two years ago by an association from Srebrenica which brings together former Bosnia and Herzegovina Army members to show solidarity with all innocent victims of war and to reciprocate for Croatia's commemorating the victims of the 1995 Srebrenica genocide against Bosniaks.
