Citizens who gathered in Sarajevo on Thursday to protest over alleged abuse of children at the Pazaric institute for the mentally disabled are “rightfully demanding accountability”, the US Embassy in Bosnia said, adding that every child must have a right to be treated with dignity.
On Wednesday, an MP in the Parliament of the Federation (FBiH), one of Bosnia’s two semi-autonomous regions, presented a series of photos allegedly showing mistreatment of children at the Pazaric institute.
The images sent shockwaves through the country, with several hundred citizens protesting in front of the FBiH government building on Thursday.
“Yesterday’s images of abuse of children with disabilities inspire public repudiation of abuse and neglect. Citizens are rightfully demanding accountability. All children have a right to be treated with dignity and to reach their full potential,” the US Embassy tweeted.
