Sarajevo Canton's authorities will also for help from international organisations in combating the alarmingly high air-pollution levels in the canton, Prime Minister Edin Forto said Thursday, during the press conference on this occasion.

“Basically we'll try to provide air purifiers and masks, especially for children. We'll also call invite all businesses to an urgent meeting because we feel that by monitoring some other businesses we could get a better understanding into the situation in the field,” Prime Minister Forto said, noting that competent inspectors are facing many difficulties in the field when it comes to conducting inspection of business facilities suspected of air pollution.

Canton Sarajevo's Transport Minister Adnan Steta said the Government had already implemented a number of measures to combat the situation, considering that traffic is one of its causes.

“Today we have 33 public transportation vehicles more than last year, running in line with today's ecological standards. Our goal is to have 85 to 90 percent of all public transportation vehicles in line with ecological standards, over the next two years. Trolleys will be able to run on batteries, meaning many buses will be replaced by trolleys,” Steta said and noted:

A measure we've now agreed on is that whenever we announce a Warning regarding air pollution, the public transportation operated by trolleybuses and trams will be free of charge for all the citizens of the Canton, enabling them to go to schools and work and without the use of private vehicles.”

Sarajevo residents are increasingly buying protective masks which let to pharmacies running out of masks.

According to the classification of harmful particles, there are three mask classes: FFP1 which block 80 percent of all free-floating particles, FFP2 which block 94 percent of particles and FFP3 which block 99 percent of all free-floating particles.
