Bosnia is facing an "uncertain situation” regarding to the spread of the coronavirus, Sarajevo Canton Health Minister Rusmir Mesihovic said on Thursday, explaining that there are not enough respirators in Sarajevo at the moment and that authorities are working on acquiring more.

Mesihovic urged the public to respect all instructions by the World Health Organisation and local authorities and to take the situation seriously.

He said that the Sarajevo University Clinical Centre is well-organised and that its director, Dr. Sebija Izetbegovic, told him that there are 36 respirators available there and ten more about to be purchased. The General Hospital Sarajevo should acquire another five or six.

Private clinics have also offered help and are providing their resources, he added.

“There will never be enough respirators, it has always been that way, and this is especially the case now,” Mesihovic said, stressing that health authorities are doing all they can to respond to the situation accordingly.

Canton Sarajevo has a sufficient number of face masks, he said.

“We are facing an uncertain situation. Nobody should be surprised if new measures are introduced and those measures must be supported,” he said, urging for a “sensationalist and populist” narrative, such as conspiracy theories about the source of the virus, to be set aside.

There are currently 11 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Bosnia.
