Human stories of besieged Sarajevo: Reunion of victim and saviour after 25 years

N1

A quarter-century after the end of the armed conflict in Bosnia, many human stories remain untold. One of them was a story of two men of the besieged Sarajevo which, unlike many war stories, has seen a happy ending these days.

Dzevad Pintol and Ismet Mrsevic first met 25 years ago. It was June 1995, the period towards the end of the Bosnian 1992-95 war. Until today, they knew nothing about each other, except that one saved another after a sniper shot.

The moment was caught on a camera. The image that recently reappeared on social networks brought the two men together, 25 years later.

Dzevad's memory of that day is still vivid.

“I stepped out of my car. As soon as I put my foot on the ground, I was shot by a sniper and that was it. Then he came and saved me. I remember they were trying to find the wound when I got to the hospital but with no success, I was all covered in blood. The next thing I remember was being put in a military hospital vehicle, that's where I lost consciousness,” he said speaking to N1's reporter.

The years that followed were not the greatest. Dzevad suffered severe pain, faced many challenges. But, finally, life has meaning.

“Sometimes when it hurts a lot I wish he never saved me. That he should have let me die. But today, I am expecting a grandchild and I am happy he saved my life. I thank him for that,” he said.

After Dzevad ran into a wartime photo showing the moment when he was rescued from certain death, he decided to put it online and asked for help in searching his saviour.

Soon after the photo was posted, Ismet Mrsevic wrote a comment:

“Hello everyone, I am this handsome guy and I would also like to meet this man.”

“I see, Mr Saviour responded. Well, I am the rescued one.”

It took them minutes to arrange a meeting in one of Sarajevo's neighbourhoods, under the circumstances not even close to those from 25 years ago.

Ismet had no idea what happened to the man whom he saved from certain death.

“I feel… It felt bad to hear this morning on the phone that the man was in a wheelchair, I was very sad to hear that. But still, I am happy that he survived because it was for a reason. And the reason is probably the grandchild he is expecting now,” he said, sitting next to Dzevad.

“I couldn't stop tears when I saw him,” he added.

Ismet's and Dzevad's story doesn't end here. They hope to spend more time together from now on and that they would witness a friendship of their grandchildren in the future.
