Anniversaries like this one in Srebrenica is one of the events that we would have liked they had never happened, so we should not have to mark them, Luxembourg’s Prime Minister, Xavier Bettel said in a video message on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide.

“There are celebrations we would prefer not to have to celebrate them.

We thought that 50 years after we discovered Auschwitz, Birkenau, Dachau we would never again have such atrocities on our continent. That is what we all said – and believed.

Fifty years later – 25 years ago – we discovered what happened in Srebrenica. 8,000 people died in a week. Why?

We still have no answer to all the questions. We even do not know the names of all the people who killed or have been killed there – not yet.

Twenty-five years later still some family members are missing. I had hoped that we had learned from the experience of the Second World War.

But we had the bitter experience that still politicians on our continent, two hours flight from my country, did, what we thought would never happen again on our continent: Deciding to kill others because they are different. Ethnicity, religions, political opinions, sexual orientations.

And when we realize, that still today, in some countries, not that far away from here, some politicians try to divide us, try to be popular by blaming others, we should never forget what happened 25 years ago,” the Prime minister said in his video message.
