Migrants illegally staying at the abandoned building of the former nursing home in the northwestern town of Bihac caused a small fire there on Monday morning in an attempt to prevent police from taking them to the Lipa migrant centre.
Firefighters managed to put the blaze under control and enabled police to enter the building.
According to local police spokesperson, Ale Siljdedic, the migrants caused “several minor fires” at the entrance to the building in order to prevent police from entering.
“They set fire to garbage and old blankets, but firefighters reacted adequately and it was put under control swiftly,” he explained.
The officers then relocated some 60 migrants from the building, he said, adding that authorities believe more than 100 people were staying in the building in the past few days and that many of them escaped the police operation.
