Slovenia on Saturday reported having conducted a record high number of 3,191 tests for the coronavirus in the past 24 hours, of which 105 came back positive, three fewer than on Friday, which saw a record-high number of daily COVID-19 cases since the start of the epidemic.

The government said the number of confirmed cases had thus increased to 3,603 and the number of active cases stood at 769.

Currently 31 patients are in hospitals, including six in intensive care.

There have been no new fatalities in the past 24 hours and the death toll remains at 135, the health ministry said.

Except for three cases of the infection imported from abroad, all the other confirmed cases are a result of local transfer.

The Slovenian government said on Friday that despite the increase in the number of new infections, it would not introduce new restrictions except if the situation deteriorates extremely. Nonetheless, as of Sunday, to facilitate the work of epidemiologists, the government will shorten the duration of compulsory quarantine for people in isolation from 14 to 10 days. This measure will apply to those who enter the country as well as others who are told to self-isolate.

The “Jozef Stefan” research institute has said that the daily number of new cases of the infection identified by testing could range between 20 and 100 in the coming days, and that it will grow gradually.
