Democratic US presidential candidate and former Vice President Joe Biden had warned in 1993 about a possibility of Srebrenica becoming a new Guernica, German journalist Michael Martens said in an interview with N1, noting that the US politician is one of those with a deep understanding of the Balkans.

The Balkans is no longer among top five priorities for Washington unlike in the 1990s, according to Martens, who claims that even for Biden it is not a priority. But, the Democratic candidate is one of the politicians who has a deep understanding of the region.

Martens recently wrote an article for the German ‘Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung’ (FAZ), motivated as he said by Biden's report he had written as a US senator following his visit to the Balkans amid the armed conflict.

Biden proved in his report that he knew very well what was going on in the region, said Martens, adding that he was impressed the most by two details of the then senator's report. The first one warning that Srebrenica could become a Guernica of our time and the second one in which he pointed at a possibility of armed conflict in Kosovo.
