Dragan Soc, a lawyer and a member of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) Montenegro Littoral Bishopric legal team said on Wednesday the successor to the late Bishop Amfilohije would be Bishop Joanikije, 61, Amfilohije’s student and current elder of the Cetinje monastery in the southwest of the country.
“He (Bishop Joanikije) is native of Montenegro, what is important, enjoys a reputation and respect in the Church, while the believers have already seen him at the post,” Soc told the Belgrade Beta news agency.
He said Bishop Amfilohije wanted Joanikije to succeed him and added the SPC was not likely to change his will.
The SPC Synod appointed Bishop of Budva-Niksic Bishopric Joanikije as an administrator after Bishop Amfilohije passed awayon October 30 from coronavirus-related ailments.
