A former American pilot whose plane was shot down above Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1995 and who survived six days without being captured has been appointed Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs, the Pentagon said.
In June 1995, Scott O'Grady (55) became a US national hero because he survived six days in a forest near the northwestern town of Bihac after his F-16 was shot down.
The pilot, who was catapulted from a height of almost 7,000 meters, suffered only mild burns on his neck. He only had a small food ration of food with him but was trained for such situations, so he managed to survive.
He was rescued by US forces in a high-risk operation as Bosnian Serb forces were also looking for him. O'Grady described the ordeal in his 2002 book, ‘Return with honors’.
