European Union and United States ambassadors in Bosnia and Herzegovina called the Mostar vote that is taking on Sunday first time after twelve years “historic” and dubbed them as the election that possibly drew the most attention after the war.
The Mostar election seemed impossible for too long, said EU ambassador Johann Sattler addressing the reporters, noting that we are today witnessing it is actually possible.
“It is a historic thing.”
He said his second message on this day, equally important, was that the day after the local election in Mostar is the day after as well as the months to come, “ just to show the citizens that a new page is turned.”
Sattler urged all “35 ladies and gentlemen who will be elected in the City Council” that they show action on the ground and tackle the problems “that have been piling up” and so that the population see the change is possible.
“Mostar is an inspiration for what is possible for the whole country,” he stressed and called on politicians to use the next year to make a progress in the whole country.
Both ambassadors thanked the citizens, observers, volunteers and civil servants who helped the election take place,
US Ambassador Eric Nelson noted that there has been a lot of discussion on irregularities in the voting process, which he assessed as something positive because that would help any irrregularity to be addressed by competent authorities, including the Central Election Commission and prosecutors.
Finally, ambassador Nelson expressed hope both the citizens and leaders will contribute to the reform of the electoral legislation, which would correct all deficiencies in 2021.
