After a brief detention, Belgrade police released Aida Corovic, a human rights activist, arrested earlier on Tuesday for throwing eggs at a mural of convicted war criminal Ratko Mladic, sentenced to life imprisonment for Srebrenica genocide, among other war crimes.

Belgrade police said they were not guarding the mural in a central city’s street but preventing a potential riot after the Youth Initiative for Human Rights said they would remove the mural on November 9, the International Day Against Fascism and Antisemitism. The police banned the rally.

People in the northern town of Sremska Kamenica managed to destroy a similar mural dedicated to Mladic.

Several of Corovic’s friends greeted her outside the local police station in Belgarde’s central Vracar municipality.
