Bosnia’s Prosecutor’s Office has requested information about the unresolved murder of 21-year-old David Dragicevic after activists started a petition asking state prosecutors to take over the case from the judiciary in Bosnia’s Republika Srpska (RS) entity.

In March 2018, police found the lifeless body of David Dragicevic, 21, in a river near Banja Luka, the administrative centre of Bosnia's Serb-majority semi-autonomous RS entity.

A few days later, authorities told the media that the cause of death was likely drowning and that Dragicevic had taken drugs.

The press conference sparked a series of protests, especially since another autopsy performed on David’s body showed a different time of death.

The case was later reclassified into murder.

Led by David’s father, who believes police and prosecutors in the RS are protecting whoever killed his son, numerous citizens have organised into the ‘Justice for David’ group and have been protesting at the central Krajina Square in Banja Luka.

Activists from Justice for David and the ‘Put Pravde’ citizens’ association started a petition asking the state prosecutors to take over the case rom the Banja Luka Prosecutor’s Office.

The BiH Prosecutor’s Office reacted immediately and sent a request to obtain documentation regarding the case.

“The request was sent to the Banja Luka District Prosecutor's Office and the Republika Srpska Special Prosecutor's Office. After the submission and analysis of the case, the Prosecutor's Office will make a decision on further steps and activities,” the institution said.

According to the petition by the NGOs, the investigation into the case is “only formally” ongoing and has not yielded any results.

They noted that David’s father had submitted an appeal to the Constitutional Court alleging that the RS judiciary “failed to conduct an adequate investigation into the murder of David Dragicevic.”

“We believe that there are strong arguments for the transfer of the Dragicevic case from the Banja Luka District Public Prosecutor's Office, and in this way, we appeal to the Prosecutor's Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina to do so. No one in the Banja Luka District Public Prosecutor's Office will conduct an adequate investigation into the murder of David Dragicevic, because prosecutors and top officials of the Republika Srpska Interior Ministry are protecting each other and will never arrest perpetrators or accomplices,” Pokret Pravde said.
