Bosnia closest to EU average in healthcare and digitalization, lags in environment, study shows

Bosnia and Herzegovina has narrowed its economic gap with the EU average largely thanks to an increase in the minimum wage, according to the Converge2EU study for BiH, "Mind the Gap: BiH’s Path to EU Living Standards," presented in Sarajevo today.

Azra Becirovic, project manager representing the Center for Policy and Governance, which conducted the study, said that Bosnia is closest to the EU average in healthcare and digitalization.
"We are very advanced in digitalization, and in terms of the number of households with internet access, we will catch up with the EU average in nine years," Becirovic said.
She emphasized that life expectancy in BiH is very close to the EU average and that the healthcare sector as a whole stands at 75 percent of that average.
Becirovic noted, however, that out-of-pocket healthcare expenses paid directly by citizens remain very high in BiH.
She added that environmental protection recorded the poorest results, with BiH falling further behind the EU average because almost nothing is being done in this area.
