Bosnia part of $5 million worth regional initiative for locally led climate resilience solutions

The Balkan Climate Adaptation Futures initiative is being implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), with $5 million in funding from the Adaptation Fund, in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia. The aim is to help local communities develop, test and scale up solutions addressing the climate challenges they are already facing.

From floods and droughts to wildfires and extreme heat, the effects of climate change are increasingly being felt at the local level. At the same time, local actors often have the best understanding of their own risks and ideas for practical solutions.

Through the initiative, local actors, civil society organizations, innovators, social enterprises and small businesses will have an opportunity to receive financial, technical and business support to develop innovative solutions. Particular focus will be placed on solutions that can be applied in other communities and contribute to greater climate resilience across the region.

The support will cover areas including the resilience of local livelihoods and food security, water management, ecosystem-based solutions and urban climate resilience, with a particular focus on including women and other groups that are often disproportionately affected by climate change.

The regional approach will enable experiences and solutions developed in one community to be shared and adapted across the Western Balkans, connecting local innovation with broader policies and financing for climate adaptation, UNDP said.

Balkan Climate Adaptation Futures is a four-year initiative funded by the Adaptation Fund and implemented by UNDP in cooperation with partners in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia.
