In its tourist offer, the town of Srebrenik offers a tour of the medieval Old Town and Fortress, which are the best-preserved monuments in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Over 20,000 visitors visit the fortress annually, and the Srebrenik Tourist Board announced new projects to attract even more visitors.

The Srebrenik Fortress is one of the best-preserved monuments of the medieval Bosnian state thanks to the dedicated work of the local community. It was mentioned for the first time in the charter of the Bosnian ban Stejepan II Kotromanic in 1333 when he sold Ston and Peljesac to the Republic of Dubrovnik.

“Srebrenik can boast of that old mention from that period. Bosnian citizens are slowly realizing the importance of the Middle Ages. The Old Town of Srebrenik is the best-preserved fortress in our country reaching back to the Middle Ages,” Mirza Ibrisimovic, the director of the Srebrenik Culture and Information Center told N1.

The Fortress facility is located in Srebrenik and the Cultural Center’s desire was to use its potential so that everyone would be satisfied.

“We have people coming here for the first time and those who came back more than once. In this way, we’re showing that we love our country and cherish its past. We believe that it’s a great resource whose beauty we must use. We’ve recorded a constant increase in visitors over the recent years, which was around 20,000 annually. We want to improve the offer in the area of the Old Town and for the Fortress to be fully operational for this purpose. We solved water supply and drainage at the Old Town, and then we completed the access roads and footpaths leading to it. Most people come from Bosnia and Herzegovina, and there are Bosnians working abroad, but lately, we’ve had visitors from abroad,” Ibrisimovic told N1.

He added that they are lucky that conservation and restoration of the Fortress were performed over the past fifty years.

When the Ottomans conquered the Fortress at the beginning of the 16th century, it had today’s identical appearance with some minor extensions. They worked on strengthening the walls and building a tower.

“The Fortress and that location are important for us and we rightfully call ourselves the royal city, because there is information that the first Bosnian king Tvrtko I Koromanic was born in this area,” Ibrisimovic said adding that they plan to expand the tourist offer in cooperation with the Tuzla airport.

“Over the last few years, we’ve allowed it to be presented spontaneously. People come, take pictures, present it on social networks, and we worked on promoting the Fortress at various fairs to show it to our citizens and, of course, those abroad. The site itself consists of three separate units. The largest building was used as a barracks for the Ottoman army, a dark room as a prison or storeroom and an imitation well. Of course, once there was a time when that space was used by soldiers as a prayer area, a masjid. There were also observation posts,” Adnan Belic, a member of the Council of the Tourist Board of the town of Srebrenik added.
