Convicted war criminal Ratko Mladic dies in The Hague

Mladic was conclusively sentenced by the International Court in The Hague to life imprisonment for the Srebrenica genocide, crimes against humanity, and violations of the laws and customs of war during the conflict in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Since the pronouncement of the verdict, he had been serving his sentence within the detention unit in The Hague.

The family of the wartime commander had spent years attempting through various means to secure concessions, a transfer, and specialized medical treatment for the man responsible for major atrocities committed on European soil in modern history, though all of their requests were rejected.
