The Constitutional Court of Bosnia’s Republika Srpska (RS) entity ruled that certain parts of a recent law making the use of the Cyrillic script obligatory for all publicly funded events in the Serb-majority region violates the vital national interests of Bosniaks and Croats.

The RS Constitutional Court stated that the said law stipulates that the use of the Cyrillic script is obligatory for cultural and other events which are financed or co-financed from public funds and that not doing so is a punishable offence. The court said that this favours the use of Cyrillic script in relation to the Latin script.
"Considering that the constituent Croat and Bosniak people do not connect their national identity with the Cyrillic alphabet and that such a law deprives them of freedom in choosing the way of expressing this characteristic of their identity, the legislator acted contrary to the obligation to provide guarantees for the preservation of the national identity of members of all constituent peoples under equal conditions as prescribed by the Constitution," the statement said.
