The European Union has approved a grant of €10.7 million for the construction of a section of the motorway along pan-European Corridor Vc near Mostar, for which an agreement was signed on Monday.

The 13.8-kilometre-long motorway section from Mostar North to Mostar South is considered one of the most technically challenging parts of the entire BiH section of Corridor Vc.

The route runs primarily through hilly and mountainous terrain, requiring a combination of cuttings, embankments, and a large number of engineering structures.

This section will include the construction of six twin-tube tunnels with a total length of 8,110 metres, as well as 11 bridges and viaducts, three underpasses, and two overpasses. The total value of the project is approximately €200 million.

In addition to the €10.7 million EU grant, construction will be financed through a €110 million loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), as well as funds from domestic commercial lenders.

The agreement was signed by Denis Lasic, Director of Motorways of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Charlotte Ruhe, EBRD Managing Director for Central and South-Eastern Europe.

Lasic emphasised the importance of this infrastructure project for Bosnia and Herzegovina and expressed gratitude to the EU and the EBRD for their continued support.

Charlotte Ruhe emphasised that the grant will help accelerate construction, while Antonella Di Sandri from the EU highlighted the European Union’s commitment to regional integration and the economic development of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The construction of Corridor Vc, which connects Budapest with Croatia's seaport of Ploce, is considered a key infrastructure project for improving transport connectivity in Southeast Europe.

The authorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina have previously announced that the BiH section of the Corridor Vc is expected to be fully completed by 2030. So far, around 150 of the approximately 335 kilometres of motorway planned to pass through Bosnia and Herzegovina have been built.
