Professor Azrudin Husika from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Sarajevo highlighted the urgent need for energy reforms in Bosnia and Herzegovina during an interview on Novi dan. He discussed the role of U.S. support for the Southern Gas Interconnection, the challenges posed by dependence on Russian gas, and the broader energy transition the country must undertake.

“We face extremely low energy security across all parameters,” Husika began. “Historically, we've rarely experienced supply disruptions due to international relations, but we must work to enhance supply security and reduce dependence on a single source. Transitioning to green energy isn't an additional cost—it’s a developmental opportunity that ultimately lowers overall expenses.”

Husika warned that resisting the green transition could lead to greater financial burdens than the current fossil fuel-dominated energy mix. He emphasized the need for Bosnia to prioritize domestic energy sources and adopt renewable energy technologies, particularly in light of its inefficient energy consumption.

“We are four times less efficient in energy use compared to others. This inefficiency stems from poor societal organization. For example, gas is predominantly used for heating homes, which is not its optimal use. Gas should be directed toward industrial zones where it can have greater value,” he explained.

The professor also stressed the importance of integrating new technologies and ensuring sustainable energy practices. “Businesses are already investing heavily in solar and wind power, which are expanding rapidly in Bosnia. However, the state needs to manage this growth and guide it toward sustainability. Without proper oversight, the push for renewable energy could veer in the wrong direction, driven solely by business interests.”

Husika concluded with a call for systemic change, noting that Bosnia's current emissions far exceed the capacity of its forests to absorb them. “We need a well-coordinated national approach to ensure that energy reforms align with environmental sustainability and long-term security,” he stated.
