German Federal Government decided to fully cancel four infrastructural projects in Bosnia's Republika Srpska entity worth 105 million euro due to the secessionist policy of the Serb-majority part and its president Milorad Dodik, German Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina said on Wednesday. According to press release, official Berlin decided to let the projects expire and successively finalise them in that way, and has informed Bosnia's Foreign Ministry and project partners about that decision.

The projects include two phases of the overhaul of Trebinje hydro power plant, the overhaul of wind park Hrgud, and waste water disposal in Gradiska.

The Embassy recalled that the Federal Government acted in April 2022 and decided to temporarily halt these projects, in response to the decisions passed by Republika Srpska entity parliament from December 2021, regarding the transfer of competencies and establishing of parallel institutions “with an aim to weaken the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina.”

“However, the secessionist measures were not withdrawn as requested by the German government. Instead, Republika Srpska Government and its president continued with escalation of political crisis. German Federal Governent has now passed a decision it will not relaunch the halted projects. The projects will be successively finalised in line with contract,” the government said, emphasising that this decision does not refer to other projects on the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina or the Western Balkans, which also include Republika Srpska, nor does it affect the cooperation with civil society.

The statement also emphasised Germany's support of Bosnia's progress towards the European Union.

“Germany still stands ready to intensify the cooperation with Bosni and Herzegovina, both in the Federation and Republika Srpska. However, the fundamental condition for that is the preservation of the peace, the rule of law and territorial integrity of the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina,” it said.
