The director of the World Health Organization (WHO) office in Serbia, Marian Ivanusa, said Saturday that the current epidemiological situation in Serbia is "very good" and that it should be used for vaccination "as soon as possible" in order to get ready to defend against the coronavirus delta strain that has just been recorded in the region.

“The fact that the delta strain appeared does not mean that the worsening will happen immediately, but the situation can certainly get worse in July, August. We will see, I hope for the best,” Ivanuca told RTS.

He added that vaccination is the best defence against the coronavirus, and that the delta strain spreads much more efficiently compared to others, which is why it is becoming the predominant virus.

He mentioned that precisely because of that property of delta strain, the existing measures against the coronavirus must be strictly applied, stating that numerous countries have mitigated them.

“People have relaxed and in combination with the virus that spreads faster, it leads to consequences, ie worsening of the situation,” said Ivanusa, adding that the virus spreads very quickly among young people.
